Strip Bingo

I know this sounds like a game you would play at a frat party in college but I promise you it is totally clean. Credit for this game comes from the Comprehensible Classroom.

Strip bingo is like traditional bingo only with a twist. Students will fill out a bingo board with words or phrases provided by you. The game changer is students have to tear away (or strip off) the word or phrase from the bingo board until they have no words left.

What you will need

  • A story, text, or material that has a lot of repetition
  • Bingo boards for students (click on it, it is free!)
  • A vocabulary list of words or phrases from your text

How it works

The teacher will show a list of words or phrases for students to use. Students will fill out the vocabulary words anywhere on their board. The teacher will tell the story, pausing after each sentence to allow students time to tear their vocabulary word off their board. Students can only tear the vocabulary word off the strip on the outside of the bingo board working their way inward. This means that students are working from the outside border until they reach the middle. Students win by being the first person to get to the middle of the board and tear that vocabulary word in half. The middle box is the last word to be torn off.

Variations

Of course, we don’t always have a text that requires so many words to be used. To use this game at any time, modify the board you are using.

  • Use only 5 squares tearing left to right
  • Use 9 boxes still working your way inward
  • Use 2 columns with a specific number of squares. Tear down the columns. Column one must be used before column 2 can be torn off

Why use this game?

The reason you would use this game is to use a text several times. So the point of the game is to repeat the information more than once until you have a winner. Remember to use texts that are highly repetitive and repeat the vocabulary words several times during the story.

Enjoy this game with your students. They will love this twist on traditional bingo.
