Pop Up!

Pop up! is one of those games I forgot I used to play at least once a week when I had a few minutes before the bell rang. It is quick and easy to do with zero prep. I originally found this activity via Senora Chase.

I was going through my game folder and remembered the game Sparkle. Then I found Pop Up! and knew I needed to share it with you too.

I am thinking I need to analyze my folders and remember all the fun games and activities I have forgotten about!

Why Play Pop Up?

Pop Up! is absolutely no prep and you get full engagement from students. And again, it gets students up and moving even if it is for a second.

When do you play Pop Up?

Play this game any time (because it is zero prep). But here are some ideas for play:

  • At the end of class when you have a few minutes to kill
  • As a warm-up activity
  • To review before a unit exam or final
  • When you are just too tired to do anything else

This game can last 2 minutes to 30 minutes. Just keep playing different rounds to make the game last longer. Just remember to gauge the audience to make sure they are not becoming bored.

How to play

Split the class in half. Literally, draw an imaginary line right down the center of the classroom. Determine how many students you have on each team. Try to keep it as even as possible. If you have 30 students, you should have 2 teams of 15. Number each team from 1 – 15. If you have an odd number of students, just assign 2 numbers to one student.

The teacher will give a word, phrase, or sentence. Sign these three times then call a random number (determined by how many players are on the teams). The first student assigned that number to pop up will give the meaning. The student can say it in English, fingerspell it, or write it on a whiteboard. Whoever is first to pop up and answer it correctly, that team will get a point.

Keeping score

You can use this scorecard created by Senoria Chase to play with your classes. It helps to remember which numbers you called out. Somehow I always manage to say the same one over and over.
