Organizing Your Home Office

We all know that teachers take work home. It doesn’t matter if it during a traditional school year or a pandemic. It is inevitable that a section of your home becomes your personal workspace.

If you are like me, you don’t do well with clutter all around you. Have you heard the phrase “tidy home, tidy mind?” This is applicable to your school desk or your home workspace as well. A clean workspace will provide you peace of mind and improve your productivity. Getting rid of the clutter can alleviate anxious feelings so you can focus on your work instead of looking for the supplies you need to complete your to-do list.

Prevent Clutter

To prevent clutter from building up, it is important to have some organizational systems in place. Organization will help you feel calmer and ready to tackle any task on your to-do list.

Use a rolling cart to place all of your work materials. It can easily be rolled out of the living space and placed in a closet or the garage.

When you set out to clear the clutter or design you a home workspace, start with one area. A good jumping off point is your desk – or table area- that you use for your home office.

Tips to help you

  1. Remove the paper. Paper can be the number one cause of clutter in your workspace. Purge it. Recycle what you don’t need and organize the papers you do need. You might be able to use a mobile filing cabinet, a rolling cart, or an accordion file folder to keep paper in its place.
  2. Store in containers. Containers are easy to remove from your living space and store out of site. Then they can easily be pulled out when you need to work. They also stack well and can be neatly placed in a corner.
  3. Label everything. Use a label maker to label your containers. This will help you easily find items that you need to do your job.
  4. Organize your textbooks. Place the books in a plastic container and store in a closet or use a book caddy on a table or desk. If you are using a bedroom for an office, store the books under the bed.
  5. Organize the small stuff. Office supplies are generally small and can end up being found all over your house. Find one spot for the paper clips, post-it notes, and other supplies. Use an all-purpose organization caddy like this one.
A plastic container can remove workspace clutter by placing it on a shelf out of the way.

Start your organization journey today to help you become more productive in your planning and work. You will thank yourself in the fall when you return back to work and will need to utilize your home workspace more often.
