Change It Up, Keep Boredom At Bay

It is that time of year, the “April Slump.” Between state testing, AP exams, and the siren song of summer vacation, the energy in the classroom can feel like it’s running on fumes.

When both you and your students are dragging, the best way to keep boredom at bay isn’t by pushing harder through the curriculum; it’s by shifting the energy with games that feel like a break but work like a lesson. Here are nine high-engagement activities to help you survive and thrive until the final bell.

Fast-Paced Vocabulary Practice

Keep their eyes on you and their hands moving with these low-prep favorites:

  • Sign It Find It: A scavenger-style game that forces students to process signs quickly to find scrambled words on a sheet of paper.
  • The Flyswatter Game: A classic for a reason! It’s the ultimate high-energy competition for identifying vocabulary under pressure. Check out the options and non-traditional ways you can play this game.
  • Mind Reading: A fun, interactive way to practice vocabulary where students have to anticipate and match what their peers are thinking. Can they read each other’s minds? This offers a ton of repetition. It is quick and a student favorite.

Language Practice with a Creative Twist

If you need to practice sentence structure and comprehension without it feeling like a worksheet, try these:

  • Record, Pass, Draw: A “telephone” style game that combines recording a message, passing the device, and interpreting the message through drawing. The results are usually hilarious. Because it is fun, students forget they are practicing.
  • Logic Puzzles: Perfect for those days when the brain is tired but still needs to work. These puzzles require deep comprehension to solve. This one requires a bit of teacher prep, but it is well worth it. Create it once, use it year after year.
  • Sentence Picture Relay: Combine movement with grammar. Students relay to match signed sentences with the correct visual representations. It is teamwork and collaboration.

Game-Changers for Whole-Class Fun

When you need to turn the entire period into an event, these three never fail:

  • Classroom as a Board Game: Literally turn your floor tiles or desks into a giant game board. Students are the game pieces! You can use an entire class period on review if you just don’t want to plan!
  • Keep Talking: An activity designed to build circumlocution skills and keep the target language environment active and engaging.
  • Your Numbers Up: A fast-moving game that keeps everyone on their toes, focusing on number fluency and quick reaction times.
