Here are 18 things to try to be innovative and get out of your comfort zone. Try at least 4.
- Create a twitter account – Use students to be the guest “tweeter” every day to summarize what they learned that day. Try to come up with a clever class hashtag to use and incorporate your school or district hashtag as well. (#SageASL #cusdlearns #scbobcats).
- Create a classroom Instagram – Here are 10 ways you can use Instagram in the classroom.
- Find a new game to play in the classroom – I have created some games specific to ASL or create, borrow, or Google a new idea. Students love to use games to learn.
- Ditch worksheets – Find creative, level-appropriate communication activities by using crazy topics, TEDtalks and other ideas that connect to student interest.
- Create a Meme project – Add pop culture to your classroom.
- Create a historical timeline – Turn your classroom into a historical timeline by using student work and research. Use student-generated work and let them become a “living” museum.
- Assign an animated book report – If you require reading as part of your curriculum, try a new way to do a book report.
- Go paperless – Using Google Classroom is an amazing place to start. Try using no paper for a week.
- Redesign your bulletin boards or walls – Use your space to be creative. Don’t leave the same things up for 10 months. Try ideas here or find a new poster here.
- Use a student as a guest speaker – Use Screencastify to allow students to take over. Start here.
- Thematic Units – Throw out the textbook and create an authentic, original lesson on a topic that really connects with your students and is relevant for this century.
- Redesign your classroom space – Get creative, incorporate flexible seating or rearrange your space.
- Follow a new blog – There are a lot of great blogs out there that have to do with teaching and best practices. Try one thing you read and share with others in a Facebook group.
- Try a new app – Use a new app in the classroom. Maybe it is for partner activities, keeping track of points, partnering up students or playing a game.
- Flip your classroom – Try one lesson a unit to add variety to your classroom.
- Join a Twitter chat – Twitter chats can help you get the professional development you need. You can learn from various professional groups by searching hashtags.
- Use Pear Deck – this is an interactive way for you to engage students in the world langague. It is a Google exstention that makes your Slide presentations interactive adn allows you to check understanding on the spot.
- Try a new online game – Gimkit is the best. Students love it. You can add GIFs (get them from TpT here) and let the learnign adn review begin.
