Digital Interactive Notebooks

We all know I love all things digital. Especially if it syncs with Google. I have been doing some research and learning more about how to make and use digital interactive notebooks in the ASL classroom.

What are Digital Interactive Notebooks?

Digital interactive notebooks are different than traditional interactive notebooks. Traditional interactive notebooks consist of a lot of cutting, gluing, student notes, and reflections. They house a lot of graphic organizers and foldables that can be used as study aids. Traditional Interactive Notebooks are different than a Digital Interactive Notebook. The biggest difference between traditional and digital notebooks is the amount of time you save using digital resources. Not to mention all of the paper that is saved. With Digital Interactive Notebooks, there is no cutting, gluing, or messes to be cleaned up. They also allow students’ work to be saved in the cloud. They can’t be lost!

Regardless of which method you use for your classroom, you will see that a student notebook is a great way for students to record information and become a readily made resource for students.

How Do I Make a Digital Interactive Notebook?

For my personal preference, I use Google Slides. I am a G suite user and I find it easy to work with and synch with my Google Classroom. You can, of course, use PowerPoint or Word. I tend to stay away from Word docs or Google Docs because they aren’t as easy to manipulate what I want to do with my final notebook. You can use whatever works for you.

I always start by resizing my pages to be the size of a sheet of paper, 8.5 x 11. Then I set to creating. Since the notebook will be digital, you can use lots of images and colorful backgrounds.

What to Include in the Digital Interactive Notebook?

There are so many things that can be included in the notebook depending on what is being taught.

Some ideas are:

  • Graphic organizers
  • Reflection sheets
  • Manipulatives
  • Summaries
  • How-to explanations
  • Data charts
  • Infographics
  • Culture data

Of course, there is so much more you can put in depending on what you are teaching. Content is always specific to your own classroom.

Enjoy creating your own Digital Interactive Notebooks for your classes.
