Are you always trying to find new ways to teach language in a natural, comprehensible way? I know I am. So when I read a Facebook post from Josua Cabral from the World Language Classroom, I was inspired by his picture of a Bitmoji Classroom that had a window looking out into the world. I instantly thought what a brilliant way to teach vocabulary. As the class virtually travels the world they learn about countries and associated words.
This idea is so simple yet has the power to be an amazing vehicle to learning. Bitmojis are all the rage right now. Teachers are especially loving them. But your students will too. They are cute, engaging, and always changing…I wonder if we can find Bitmojis that have traditional clothing of countries around the world.
How can you use this idea?
I plan to use this idea in my online class as the beginning of the class chat. It is a good way to start your class in the target language, provide some input, and get students the opportunity to ask questions and learn a new language. But how else can I use this idea you ask? How about trying one of these…
- A class warm-up or attention grabber
- A game of 20 questions
- A vocabulary review (link the word to the image out the window)
- Virtual field trips
- Virtual tours
- Cultural immersion
- Learn about ethnic dishes of the country
Really the list can go on and on and the teaching opportunities are endless.
How do I make my Bitmoji room?
There are really just a few easy steps to making a Bitmoji classroom and a number of ways to use them.
- LMS header
- Virtual classroom
- Class pictures using Bitmojis (picture all the student’s Bitmoji’s in one room)
- Resource guide
- Virtual library
To make the Bitmoji virtual classroom, just follow the same steps you would for creating your Bitmoji header except keep your slide the original size. If you are still at a loss or just plain and simply out of time, you can make a copy of my already made Slide Deck that includes images of 14 countries. I have also included the country name, what the landmark is, and some even have virtual tour links you can use the students.
Have fun and keep learning!
