I learned this game from Joshua Cabral at the World Langague Classroom. The Die Decides is an engaging game that can be used in language classrooms to practice vocabulary, grammar, speaking, or any other language skills. I like to use it for comprehension questions to spice up plain old worksheets.
When to Use The Die Decides
- To practice vocabulary
- After a story
- Reviewing for an assessment or final exams
- To add repetition to your lesson
Materials Needed
This is really a low-prep activity. Teachers can do it on the fly or with very little prep involved once you have an answer sheet template made. All you will need is
- one die per group
- a score sheet/answer sheet for each group
- a set of questions to ask students
How The Die Decides Works
- The teacher creates a set of questions to ask students.
- Place students in groups or with a partner.
- Give each group a die and an answer sheet.
- Students roll the die and place the number on the sheet in the column labeled “die #.”
- In the target language, the teacher poses a question or vocabulary word.
- Teams can discuss the answer and write the answer in pen on the answer sheet.
- The teacher provided the class with the correct answer either sign, verbally, or on a slide deck (depending on the language you teach).
- The teacher should circulate or observe to make sure answers are not being changed.
- If teams are correct, they win the number of points in the “die #” column but if they answer wrong, they lose that many points.
- The team with the most points at the end of the game wins.
That is it! It is really that simple. It is a more engaging way to ask questions after a story or lecture than just handing out a worksheet.
- it is collaborative
- it is engaging
- it adds variety to your classroom
