Summer 2020 PD Challenge: Prepare for Flexible Learning Environments

We all need a bit of motivation to get things accomplished in the summer. This summer is even more important to be productive and accomplish tasks. With the uncertainty of the Fall 2020 school year looming over teachers, it is vital that we do research, learn new skills, and be prepared for anything.

Personal challenges can have a positive impact on your life and help reduce stress when you feel successful and accomplished. People often don’t improve on the things they want to because the task seems too daunting or they just don’t know where to start. The challenge for this summer is to help you have a unit planned before you walk into your classroom in the fall. This unit will be able to be used in face to face learning environments or an online model. By preparing and creating now, you will feel the success because you will have the results you desire.

The focus on this specific challenge is to create or revamp a unit that you will be able to teach in any learning environment. We will start by preparing goals that align with standards and identifying the important terms and concepts that will need to be learned. The challenges will include:

  • Aligning goals to standards
  • Making a one-stop calendar
  • Designing a unit of study
  • Incorporating a Digital Portfolio Assessment
  • Help with standards-based grading
  • Providing feedback in an online environment
  • Tools for online teaching
  • Mini challenges for organization and self-care

Challenge Packet

The thought is by doing these tasks now you will be ready for the school year and enter the classroom feeling more at ease. You won’t be trying to check these tasks off your to-do list while attending meetings and completing the other million tasks teachers do at the start of the year. And new this year to the teacher task list is the million Meet/Zoom calls you will be doing in addition to your start of the year workload.

This professional development provides a packet with the challenges for you to work through. The PD will be completed in a Facebook Group.

Pacing

There are 7 challenges altogether and they can be completed at your own pace. I will keep a schedule of when to start the tasks, however, you can start and finish at your own pace. You just don’t want to procrastinate and not get them finished. The challenges will last one month from June 15 – July 15.

Accountability

The challenges will be conducted in a private Facebook group. The information to join the group will be in the challenge packet found on the Teachers Pay Teachers website. The group will offer support, ideas, and accountability to keep you going. Again, the goal is to accomplish what YOU need to accomplish to reduce the beginning of the school year stress teachers often feel.

What You Will Need

There are a few essentials you will need to get started.

  • School calendar for 2020-2021 (bell schedules, testing, holidays, etc.)
  • State standards and/or ACTFL standards
  • Your plan book – digital or hard copy (I use both)
