I wish I could give credit to whoever taught me this game, but I can’t remember who it was. It is a game I played for so many years then stopped for some reason. I almost forgot about it until recently.
So I want to share with you this fun, no prep, fingerspelling/vocabulary game.
How to set up Sparkle
Have students stand up in a circle around the room. Or if it is a nice day go outside and get some fresh air. Make sure everyone can see each other in the circle. If they can’t see, they can’t play.
Select a person to go first. This can be by age, birth month, height, or a volunteer.
Selecting the word
The teacher or another student selects a word. This can be current unit vocabulary, something you just covered in a lecture, or review words. The person starting, signs the word.
How to play
The person to the left of the signer will give the first letter of the word. The person on the left of them will give the second letter and so on until the word has been completely spelled out. After the last letter is given, the person to the left of that person signs “SHINE” or sparkle. The person to the left of them is out.
If the word is LIGHT, person one signs L, person 2 signs I, and person 3 signs G….and so on until person 5 signs T and the person to their left sparkles. The person to the left of SHINE is out.
At this point, you can give a new word or let the student next to sparkle select.
Other ways to be “out”
Students are out if they
- don’t know the word
- use the wrong letter
- can’t provide a letter
- repeat the letter of the person before them (not paying attention)
If any of these no-nos are committed, the person after must pick up where the error was made. For example, the word is HAIR. Person one signs H, person 2 signs A, and person 3 signs A. Person 3 is out and person 4 will need to sign A to stay in the game.
I remembered this game after watching Only Murderers in the Building. If you have seen it, the glitter made me remember!
