Quiz, quiz, pass is a cooperative game that both students and teachers love. It also goes by the name quiz, quiz, trade or quiz, quiz, switch. It is one of those activities I love because it gets students out of their desks which is very important to me. However, it is also a great activity because it offers repetition, practice in asking questions, and forces students to come up with an answer on the spot.
When To Use
Quiz, quiz, trade is a great activity for review. It can be used just about any time during a unit and it works amazingly as a review at the end of the unit.
- For review after new terms have been introduced
- Before a quiz or a test
- To get students up out of their seats
- To recycle old terms and concepts
- Before a graded assignment
How It Works
Create the cards. Make enough cards for each student in your class to have one. I like to put three questions on each card, but this is not required. One question will work too. Distribute one card to each student. Pair students up. If you have an odd number of students, you may have one group of three. Once students are paired, have them sit down and have them ask and answer the questions on their cards. . Once the pair have quizzed each other and passed the cards, they will stand up. This will let students know who needs a new partner. If students are standing, they are waiting for a partner, if they are sitting, they are quizzing.
There is some flexibility in how to create the cards. As I mentioned above you can create the cards with as many questions as you like, 1 – 5. If you are looking for a quick turnaround or you have a small amount of material to cover, only put one question on the card.
Modeling the Game
If you have never played quiz, quiz, pass before, it will help to model it for the class before starting. Bring a student volunteer up. Give them one of the cards and have them ask you the questions. You will answer the questions then ask your questions. After that has been done, pass the cards. Once you model the game, you are ready to play.
Variations to the Game
- Have students create their own questions on the cards to save the teacher prep time
- Use inside, outside circles and the teacher will control the amount of time partners work together
