Recently I was having a discussion about how we can better utilize GIFs in the classroom or for online teaching. More specifically was there a platform that students or teachers could use to create flashcards. This conversation started with Jenny Daily and it got me thinking. With all of the tools out there, there had to be a way to really use the vocabulary in a more visual form. We all know that 2-D images aren’t the best way to learn ASL.
What I discovered was a very simple and easy way to create flashcards using Google Slides. I am a huge fan of Google Slides for making most of my lessons, especially online or digital work I want kids to do.
In Google Slides under Templates, there is a Flashcard template that is already created for you. All you need to do is replace the image with a GIF. It is really that easy. This is a time saver. You can upload the GIF from Google Drive, a URL, or your hard drive.
On the premade template, you have lots of options.
- You can leave the bottom of the card blank for students to type in the answer.
- You can place the word on the card and have students create the GIF.
- You can provide the blank template and have students create their own flashcards.
There are also other options in the template you can use. You can use an image of an object and then students flip to the next slide and see the GIF of the vocabulary word.
This is a video I watched that showed how this template works. It is short, sweet, and easy to follow.
I hope this template will help you use vocabulary in a more visual format to help students better their language skills. You can get premade GIFs from ASL Hands on Deck to save you a ton of time and get started on your flashcards now!
