What is find the intruder?
Find the intruder is a quick, stress-free activity for both the teacher and student. It is quick to put together by the teacher and can be quickly completed in class as an activity or assessment. And as an added bonus it scores quickly. It works great with any interpretive activity like stories, movie talks, or picture talks. This can even work with cultural lectures! Basically, find the intruder is the same text (story) you taught with false information in it. Students need to identify the false information or “the intruder.”
How do I set up find the intruder?
After you have told a story or provided cultural information, retell the story through video for ASL teachers or written/spoken text for other language teachers. In the recorded material you include 3 – 5 errors (intruders) in the story. Students will watch or listen to the story with the goal of writing and correcting the information.
The setup is quick and easy. For example, if you tell a story about Donald Duck going to the grocery store and meeting Daisy Duck then asking her to go out to dinner with him at McDonald’s. In the story retelling, you might put in the story that Donald asks Daisy to go to Taco Bell. That is the intruder. Students would identify Taco Bell as the intruder and correct it with McDonald’s.
Tips for find the intruder:
- You always put the story in the target language and the responses are in the first language.
- Always tell the story first then record the information to use the following class period. This ensures you have an accurate story.
- Use 3 – 5 “intruders” or false information. More or less just becomes burdensome.
- Use this template to get you started. The blank space is for the video or the written text.
