The Stress-Free Fall: A Summer Planning
Workshop for ASL Teachers Overview

In just a few hours a month, you will crush stress and unleash confidence and creativity to kick off the new school year.

The Stress-Free Fall is a 50-hour professional development course designed to help ASL teachers build the essential structures for a successful school year before students ever walk into the classroom.

This course runs June 1, 2026 – August 1, 2026, and is designed to be fully self-paced, allowing teachers to complete the work on their own timeline throughout the summer, working only a few hours a month.

Participants will work through a combination of:

  • Recorded instructional videos

  • Scholarly articles and curated blog posts

  • Real-life classroom examples and sample resources

  • Guided workbook activities and reflections

  • Optional live sessions for discussion and collaboration

Course materials are designed to help teachers actively build and refine their classroom plans while learning best practices in language teaching and course design.

Participants are also invited to join a private Facebook community group where teachers can share ideas, ask questions, and collaborate with others preparing for the upcoming school year.

Two optional live sessions will be offered during the course to provide opportunities for discussion, Q&A, and sharing ideas with fellow educators.

By the end of the program, teachers will have practical materials prepared for the upcoming school year, including foundational course structures, instructional plans, and classroom procedures, so they can begin the fall semester feeling prepared and confident.

Learning Path

In this challenge, you will design a clear, easy-to-follow syllabus for your ASL course. We will walk through what information students need at the beginning of the year and how to organize it so expectations, grading, and course goals are easy to understand. By the end, you’ll have a polished syllabus ready to share with students and families.

In this challenge, you will develop clear routines for common classroom situations such as entering class, using voice-off expectations, group work, and turning in assignments. These procedures will not only set you up for success on day one but save time and reduce confusion throughout the school year.

In this challenge, you will create student-friendly learning goals using “I Can” statements. These statements help students clearly understand what skills they are working toward in language learning. You’ll develop goals that align with language proficiency and make learning targets visible to students.

One Video + Workbook + Best Practices

Plan meaningful assessments that show what students can actually do with the language. This challenge focuses on designing interpretive, interpersonal, and presentational assessments for ASL learners. You will build assessments that measure real communication skills rather than memorization.

Clear rubrics make grading faster and expectations clearer for students. In this challenge, you will develop simple rubrics that evaluate ASL skills such as signing clarity, accuracy, expression, and comprehension. You’ll finish with ready-to-use rubrics that make feedback more consistent and transparent.

Create engaging lesson plans that support language acquisition and keep students actively involved. In this challenge, you will organize lessons with clear objectives, activities, and practice opportunities using backward design strategies.
