Card Talk is a pre-reading activity I used when I taught elementary school. I had forgotten about this activity until my co-worker told me she used it with a reading activity.
I know we don’t “read” in ASL but we do view. So to make this activity work for ASL, here is what I did.
Step 1
The first thing you will need for card talk is material. Determine what you want to use this activity with. It could be a story, a YouTube video, or a newscast.
Step 2
Take sentences from the resource you will be using. Sentences should be words that students understand. It should not contain new or unfamiliar terms.
Step 3
Record the sentences and turn them into a QR code so students can easily view them. Place the QR code on a card. Print and laminate them. If you are going digital, you can embed the videos in a slide deck. I like to have physical cards students can use.
Step 4
Partner students up and give them the QR code cards. Students will view the information and discuss it. What are they discussing? Depending on the material it can be making predictions, sharing facts about what they know on the topic, or just seeing the information in smaller chunks.
Remember this is a pre-viewing activity so this is a way to pique student interest in what is coming their way. It is an introduction to the information the teacher will be sharing. It is igniting their curiosity and background knowledge.
