If your students love competition, surprises, and a little bit of strategy, then Twist of Fate might become your new favorite classroom game. This interactive activity keeps students engaged because they never know what point value awaits them after answering a question. The excitement builds with every turn as teams decide whether their luck is about to change for the better—or worse!
What Is Twist of Fate?
Twist of Fate is an interactive game that combines academic questions or vocabulary words with unexpected point values. Students answer questions to earn points, but the amount they gain (or lose) isn’t revealed until after the question has been answered.
Because students don’t know the point value ahead of time, every question becomes exciting. A simple question could be worth a huge number of points, while a challenging question might only be worth a few. Some questions will even earn negative points! The element of surprise keeps everyone engaged from beginning to end.
How to Set Up the Game
Creating Twist of Fate is easy using either Google Slides or Microsoft PowerPoint.
Step 1: Create Your Game Board
Design a slide that contains a numbered grid. The size of the grid depends on how many questions you want students to answer.
Examples:
- 4 x 4 grid = 16 questions
- 5 x 5 grid = 25 questions
- 6 x 6 grid = 36 questions
Each number should be clickable or linked to the question slide.

Step 2: Link Each Number to a Question
Create a separate slide for each question.
When students select a number from the game board, the hyperlink should take them directly to the corresponding question slide.
On the question slide, create a hyperlinked button to another slide that will reveal the answer and the point value you will give for the question. I also add a return-home button if the student or team does not answer the question correctly. This way, another team can attempt to answer the question later.

Step 3: Create the Answer and Point Value Slide
After each question slide, create another slide that contains:
- The correct answer
- The point value for that question
- Any special bonus, penalty, or surprise instructions
Examples:
- +10 points
- +5 points
- Double your score
- Steal points from another team
- Lose a turn
- -10 points
The point value remains hidden until students answer the question.

Step 4: Add a Return Button
On each answer slide, create a button that hyperlinks back to the original game board.
This allows you to quickly return to the numbered grid after each question has been completed and keeps students from seeing answers and point values of other questions.
Step 5: Remove Numbers as They Are Used
As teams select questions, you can mark numbers as completed by:
- Changing their color
- Adding an X over the number
- Covering the number with a shape
- Deleting the number altogether
This helps students see which questions remain available.
How to Play
- Divide students into teams.
- The first team selects a number from the game board.
- Open the linked question and read it aloud or ask it in the target language.
- Give the team time to discuss and answer.
- If the answer is correct, advance to the next slide to reveal the hidden point value and answer.
- Award or apply the points shown on the screen.
- Return to the game board using the linked button.
- Continue rotating between teams until all questions have been used.
Adding More Twists
Want to make the game even more exciting? Consider adding special slides such as:
- Double Points
- Triple Points
- Point Swap
- Team Challenge
- Bonus Round
- Lose a Turn
- Score Shield
- Mystery Multiplier
- Steal Points
- Jackpot
These surprise outcomes encourage students to stay engaged because every selection could dramatically impact the scoreboard.
When To Play
- After new content has been introduced
- Vocabulary review
- After a story with comprehension questions
- Ask questions about a Movie talk
- Fact or opinion from a text
Why Students Love It
Twist of Fate combines review and gameplay in a way that keeps every team involved. Since the point values are hidden, students remain interested throughout the game, even if one team falls behind early. A single question can completely change the standings, creating excitement until the final round.
Most importantly, students are reviewing course content while having fun, making Twist of Fate an excellent choice for test preparation, unit reviews, substitute plans, or end-of-semester activities.
If you’re looking for a review game that builds anticipation and keeps students on the edge of their seats, Twist of Fate is a simple classroom favorite that can be adapted to any subject or grade level.
